What topic did you choose for this project and why?
The topic I chose for this project is refugees escaping war torn countries. A lot of these people escape to places like Europe or Turkey only to be denied access into the country. I hoped that my project would bring light to the fact that these refugees, after being denied access into a country, have no place to go. I also wanted to bring to light, the fact that these refugees have to walk hundreds of miles to escape war, which is why I included feet in my drawing.

What do you want the viewer to see or notice in your artwork?
I want viewers to notice that Europe is outlined in black while Africa is outlined in red. The black is used to symbolize that Europe is closed off, they are no longer allowing as many refugees to enter into their borders (especially with recent attacks in France). The red border of Africa symbolizes the war and turmoil in African countries that some refugees are trying to escape from.
What is the message of your work?
There are two main messages to my work. The first is that the refugees have no place to go once they escape their country, which is shown through the black border of Europe. The second message of my work is that these refugees have to walk hundreds of miles to escape turmoil and that walking is a large part of their journey. This message is shown through the feet drawn over the outlines of Europe and Africa, but also through the quote found in the article I based my image off of. The quote says, " What happens when you become a refugee? You walk." This quote accurately describes the life of a refugee.
